Why most stores are invisible to AI search
When a shopper asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a product, the engine can only use what its crawlers can read. On 2026-10-23 we checked the llms.txt and robots.txt of 20 well-known direct-to-consumer stores ourselves: every llms.txt we found was either Shopify's stock template with zero product facts, a 65-byte broken file, or missing entirely (404). Their robots.txt files never mentioned GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot at all.
An independent study of 216 Shopify stores (Visibility Mesh, State of AI Visibility 2026, June 2026) put the median AI visibility at 46/100, with only 13% of stores fully legible to AI crawlers. In our own audit of 343 websites, all 18 sites scoring above 72 had a real llms.txt — a correlation in our sample, not proof the file caused the scores; the template version does not get you there.

An honest note on llms.txt
The largest log study so far — Ahrefs, June 2026, server logs from 137,210 domains — found that 97% of published llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026, and no major AI provider has said it reads the file. Google's AI search guide says it is not required and is ignored by Google Search. So we do not sell llms.txt as a citation lever — and you should be suspicious of anyone who does.
Why include one at all? It costs nothing, does no harm, and some AI agents and developer tools do fetch it — and if anything reads yours, a correct file built from your real catalog beats Shopify's empty template.
